Programs & Services

GRIP is an interfaith, multi-racial collaboration dedicated to the preservation of human dignity, transforming lives and furthering social justice. Our programs and services are designed for individuals and families in need of food, shelter and supportive services to get the help they deserve.

GRIP’s core programs and services include:

  1. Our Souper Center Program, which provides lunch meals 365 days a year to over 200 people a day.
  2. Our Family Housing Program, which provides emergency shelter and transitional housing for families with children (75 year-round beds).
  3. Our West County Resource Center, which provides case management, training and treatment programs to over 2,000 unsheltered individuals and families.
  4. Our Homeless Prevention and Rapid Rehousing Program (HPRP), which is our newest program, providing fiscal and supportive services to prevent at-risk individuals and families from becoming homeless.
  5. Our Permanent Supportive Housing facility, which is home to eight (8) chronically homeless, dual diagnosed and/or disabled residents.

Souper Center: Our recently redeveloped Souper Center provides free, nutritious hot lunches to all hungry individuals and families, and provides our shelter residents with three meals a day, every day. Lunch is served from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. every day of the year. Most food is donated, and meals are prepared and served by volunteers. GRIP expects to serve over 90,000 meals this year alone! No one is ever turned away and we generally serve over 200 lunches daily. The Souper Center is co-housed at GRIP’s Family Housing and Supportive Services facility at 165 22nd Street in Richmond, CA, along with the West County Resource Center described below.

The Family Housing Program grew out of the revolving Emergency Winter Shelter Program for Homeless Families, which ran from 1993 to 2006. Since the opening of the new multipurpose “Souper Center” Family Housing and Supportive Service Center in July of 2006, the Family Housing Program has been providing year-round emergency shelter and transitional housing for families with children (75 year-round beds).

The West County Resource Center is a multi-service center that serves over 900 homeless individuals and families in West Contra Costa County each year. The Resource Center serves ANYONE in need regardless of race, creed, religion, addiction, medical condition, disability, or mental illness, and is the primary entry point for West County’s homeless population into the Contra Costa County Continuum of Care Plan.

Our Homeless Prevention and Rapid Rehousing Program (HPRP) provides fiscal and supportive services to prevent at-risk individuals and families from becoming homeless. The program is designed to prevent individuals and families on the brink of losing their home or rental unit from becoming homeless. We can arrange to make payments or partial payments on behalf of clients meeting basic qualifying criteria to landlords/property managers, utilities, etc. Learn More

The Permanent Housing Program targets people who’ve experienced chronic homelessness and physical, mental, emotional, physical or developmental disabilities, substance abuse, or complications from HIV/AIDS. The Project’s goal is to serve a population who’ve been at least dually diagnosed in the above areas. The facility currently houses 8 individuals who meet or exceed this criteria.

Homeless individuals and families come to the Resource Center for assistance from living on the streets, in cars, abandoned buildings, emergency shelters, treatment programs or the prison system. Two levels of service are available: basic and case management. Basic services include showers, laundry, the use of a mailing address, phone and Internet services, and hot meals. The more comprehensive case management service level includes all of these while addressing obstacles, addictions or behavior that may have lead to a client’s homelessness or otherwise hindered their self-sufficiency.

The Resource Center case management team is the source of referral into GRIP’s Family Housing and Permanent Housing Program. Case managers provide case guidance and assistance for residents of both programs. Case management begins with assessment, followed by a client-centered and individualized plan. Services are offered directly on-site, as well as off-site through partnerships and referrals. Case management focuses on health care, both physical and mental, and addresses barriers to self-sufficiency through substance abuse prevention and the cessation of domestic violence. Case managers refer clients to GED classes and vocational training, as well as parenting and life skill classes. Case managers arrange for group and individual counseling for parents and children, as well as childcare and youth activities. Case managers also assist clients in obtaining entitlement benefits, ID support, and negative credit.
