Families in Transition Program

Acquired in 2012, Families in Transition (FIT) is a program designated to provide equitable education
under the McKinney-Vento Act through the expedition of school enrollment, case management and
outreach programs for the homeless children and their families. GRIP, in collaboration with the West
Contra Costa Unified School District coordinates services with group homes and local shelters to ensure
the identification and aid of homeless children and youth in the district. Funding supports one full time
case management/outreach position co-located at the GRIP Shelter, dedicated to supporting homeless
youth and families in the WCCUSD. During the 2016-2017 school year, 483 students and families were
served.
Some basic services include:
❖ Distribute transportation assistance (AC Transit, WestCAT, BART passes)
❖ Provide housing and employment assistance for parents of homeless students
❖ Refer students/parents to community agencies so that they may successfully access food, housing,
health care, mental health care, substance abuse counseling, and other essential services.
❖ Distribute school supplies
❖ Provide monthly intensive case management services to homeless students in order to ensure
