What We Do

GRIP is an interfaith, multi-racial collaboration dedicated to the preservation of human dignity, transforming lives and furthering social justice. Our programs and services are designed for individuals and families in need of food, shelter and supportive services to get the help they deserve.

GRIP’s core programs and services include:

  1. Our Souper Center Program, which provides lunch meals 365 days a year to over 200 people a day.
  2. Our Family Housing Program, which provides emergency shelter and transitional housing for families with children (75 year-round beds).
  3. GRIP Resource Center, which provides case management, training and treatment programs to over 2,000 unsheltered individuals and families.
  4. Families In Transition Program, in partnership with West Contra Costa Unified School District (WCCUSED).

Souper Center: Our recently redeveloped Souper Center provides free, nutritious hot lunches to all hungry individuals and families, and provides our shelter residents with three meals a day, every day. Lunch is served from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. every day of the year. Most food is donated, and meals are prepared and served by volunteers. GRIP expects to serve over 90,000 meals this year alone! No one is ever turned away and we generally serve over 200 lunches daily. The Souper Center is co-housed at GRIP’s Family Housing and Supportive Services facility at 165 22nd Street in Richmond, CA, along with the West County Resource Center described below.

The Family Housing Program grew out of the revolving Emergency Winter Shelter Program for Homeless Families, which ran from 1993 to 2006. Since the opening of the new multipurpose “Souper Center” Family Housing and Supportive Service Center in July of 2006, the Family Housing Program has been providing year-round emergency shelter and transitional housing for families with children (75 year-round beds).

GRIP Resource Center is a multi-service center that serves over 900 homeless individuals and families in West Contra Costa County each year. The Resource Center serves ANYONE in need regardless of race, creed, religion, addiction, medical condition, disability, or mental illness, and is the primary entry point for West County’s homeless population into the Contra Costa County Continuum of Care Plan.

Families In Transition Program

​ In partnership with West Contra Costa Unified School District (WCCUSED) GRIP provides transportation, student uniforms, school supplies, enrollment assistance and student advocacy for homeless, runaway, unaccompanied youth and foster youth. Homeless individuals and families come to the GRIP Resource Center seeking assistance because they are living on the streets, in cars, abandoned buildings, emergency shelters, or are escaping a domestic violence situation.  The GRIP Resource Center provides basic services including showers, laundry, the use of a mailing address, phone, and hot meals.  The GRIP Resource Center also provides referrals to employment training and substance abuse training programs.

Emergency shelter and transitional housing (the GRIP Family Housing Program) is accessed through the GRIP Resource Center.  The Client Services Coordinator provides intake, assessment, and case managements services to GRIP Family Housing Program participants. Case management begins with assessment, followed by a client-centered and individualized plan. Services are offered directly on-site, as well as off-site, through partnerships and referrals. Case management focuses on health care, both physical and mental, and addresses barriers to self-sufficiency through substance abuse prevention and the cessation of domestic violence. The Client Services Coordinator refers participants to to GED classes, vocational training, parenting classes, life skills sessions, individual counseling for parents/children, as well as childcare and youth activities. The Client Services Coordinator also assists clients in obtaining entitlement benefits, ID fee waiver/assistance, referrals to credit repair, housing advocacy and placement.
